| Stay & registration on arrival |
For longer stays you need a valid visa. However, there is no residence registration requirement as in Europe, so you should keep your address up to date in your visa account. It is also a good idea to keep important documents to hand. |
| Check your visa or residence permit |
A suitable visa, e.g. a student or work visa, must be applied for before you travel. Without a visa, entry is not possible. You should also check its validity regularly. |
| Arrange health & social insurance |
Health insurance is compulsory for stays of more than three months. Medicare also only applies under certain country agreements, so everyone else needs private international health insurance. In addition, you should keep a record of all your policies. |
| Clarify taxes & main residence |
Depending on your visa, you may be liable for tax in Australia. You will therefore need to apply for a Tax File Number if you work or stay permanently. You should also keep your tax documents. |
| Handle change of address / re-registration |
There is no central registration requirement. Even so, your bank, employer and insurers must be told your new address. It is also advisable to update subscriptions and memberships. |
| Check rules for importing your belongings |
Australia has strict quarantine and customs regulations. Furniture, food and animals must therefore be declared and inspected before import. You should also take possible fees into account. |
| Organise utility connections & accommodation |
Once you have chosen a home, electricity, water, internet and, if applicable, gas must be set up separately. Rental contracts can also often be terminated at short notice. It is also advisable to leave emergency contacts with your utility providers. |
| Look into language and integration programmes |
Australia offers English courses and community programmes for migrants. They are particularly helpful for those arriving on family or humanitarian visas, and they also make social integration and finding your bearings easier. |
